The RCMP spent close to $5-million investigating alleged terrorist links between Mahar Arar and al-Qaeda and defending itself in the wake of his detention and torture in a Syrian prison, Montreal La Presse reported Wednesday.
Citing documents obtained under the Access to Information Act, La Presse said the RCMP’s investigation of Mr. Arar as a so-called person of interest cost the force $863,589.41.
The force’s participation in the inquiry into his detention headed by Judge Dennis O’Connor cost about $4.1 million.
Mr. Arar, a Syrian-born Canadian, was seized at a New York City airport in 2002 and sent to Syria, where he was held for more than a year and tortured into making false confessions of terrorist involvement.
He has become the best-known case of extraordinary rendition, the euphemism for the United States sending foreign terror suspects to third countries for interrogation.
Justice O’Connor said the RCMP gave misleading information to U.S. authorities about Mr. Arar before they deported him.
