Langley RCMP fatally shoot man, result of domestic dispute

Derrick Penner and Todd Coyne (Vancouver Sun)- For the second time in as many weeks a British Columbia RCMP officer has been involved in a fatal shooting with the latest incident in Langley occurring late Friday following reports of a domestic dispute.

Vancouver police have been called in to investigate the incident

Vancouver Police Const. Jana McGuinness, in a news release, said Langley RCMP officers answered a domestic disturbance complaint from a woman at an apartment in the 5200 block of 203rd Street at around 11:30 p.m. Friday.

While searching the apartment, officers were confronted by a man inside the residence. The man was shot by what McGuinness described as a veteran police officer.

The man died a short time later in hospital.

Forensic investigators from the VPD’s major crime unit are investigating the incident and have already interviewed several witnesses to the disturbance, she said.

An autopsy will be performed on the man later this week.

The Calgary police service is investigating the other RCMP-involved shooting that occurred July 30 in Kamloops after a man rammed his Toyota 4Runner into the van occupied by two plainclothes RCMP officers.

Calgary police investigators determined two shots were fired through the 4Runner’s windshield and at least one struck the driver, 50-year-old Wilbert Douglas Bartley, who died from the wound.
