Kamloops RCMP officers facing charges forced to pay own legal bills

(Canadian Press) - Three RCMP officers facing breach of trust charges in Kamloops will have to pay their own legal bills.

RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson has pulled legal defence funding from Cpl. Kenneth Brown and constables Evan Elgee and Stephen Zaharia.

The three, plus jail guard David Tompkins, were charged after an August 2010 incident when they failed to intervene and, instead, watched via video as two women prisoners had sex in a cell.

The Crown says loss of the funding is another huddle for the case, which has already seen several procedural delays — but a pre-trial conference is set for late August and the full trial is still scheduled for September.
