Inquest set for man shot by RCMP

(CBC News) – An inquest into the death of a northern Saskatchewan man shot by the RCMP two years ago will be held in Meadow Lake next week.

Harry Haineault died on Sept. 2, 2008. He was 38.

Police said in 2008 that officers from the RCMP detachment in La Loche went to a home on the Clearwater River Dene First Nation with a warrant for a man’s arrest.

There was a pursuit and a “physical altercation which escalated to the point where the RCMP member used lethal force,” police said in a news release at the time.

Haineault died at the scene.

The inquest will look into the medical cause of death and the manner of death. The coroner’s jury can also make recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future.

It will be held Oct. 18-22 at Alliance Church in Meadow Lake.

Coroner Alma Wiebe of Saskatoon will preside at the inquest.
