Inquest ordered into death of N.B. man in police custody

(CBC News) – An inquest has been ordered in the case of a New Brunswick man who died in police custody in Shediac in 2007, the chief coroner announced Friday.

Randy Nelson Trenholm, 50, of Port Elgin, was arrested for impaired driving by District 4 RCMP on June 1, 2007.

Police said he later had difficulty breathing and collapsed. They performed CPR, but Trenholm was pronounced dead at the Dr.-Georges-L.-Dumont Hospital on June 2.

An inquest will be held Feb. 22-26, at 770 Main St., in Moncton, chief coroner Greg Forestell stated in a news release.

Presiding coroner John Evans and a jury will publicly hear evidence from subpoenaed witnesses in order to determine the facts surrounding the death, said Forestell.

The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths under similar circumstances, he said.

The coroner service does not attempt to assign responsibility or blame for a death. It is an independent fact-finding agency.

Trenholm’s family has previously spoken publicly about being upset with the way the case was handled. The family had hired a lawyer to find out what happened.
