Herbert man dies after being taken into custody by RCMP

Saskatchewan (The Southwest Booster) A man wanted in connection with a July 14 assault in Herbert has died after being taken into custody by the RCMP.

An independent investigation is now underway surrounding the death of a 54-year-old man from Herbert after he was pronounced dead at Regina’s Pasqua Hospital at approximately 1 p.m. on July 16.

An RCMP press release issued on Monday explained that Morse RCMP members arrested the 54-year-old in the early morning hours of July 15.

“He was arrested without incident or confrontation and transported by the RCMP to the Swift Current detachment as part of the investigation,” the press release stated. “Shortly after arriving at the detachment, the 54-year-old male collapsed while in a interview room, before any interview had taken place.”

Swift Current EMS was called and transported to the Cypress Regional Hospital before being air lifted to Regina at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Thursday. He was pronounced deceased on Friday afternoon.

The sudden death investigation, requested by the RCMP, is being handled by the Regina Police Service. In addition, the Saskatchewan Department of Justice has appointed the Saskatoon Police Service to oversee the investigation as required by the Saskatchewan Police Act.

RCMP continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the original incident which led to the police to take the 54-year-old into custody.

During the late evening of July 14, a 41-year-old Herbert resident was assaulted and seriously injured. The victim remains in a Saskatoon hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the incident.

No charges were laid but RCMP continue to investigate the incident. Assisting in the investigation were members from the RCMP Swift Current Provincial and Swift Current City General investigation section, the Regina RCMP Forensic Identification Section and RCMP Major Crimes unit from Regina.
