Dan Singleton (Calgary Herald) - The Red Deer gravesite of one of four RCMP officers killed in the Mayerthorpe shooting in March 2005 has been desecrated, say police.
Doreen Jewell-Duffy, mother of Const. Anthony Gordon, found vandalism during a visit to the gravesite in the Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery on Sunday.
Damage included the smashing of two small angel figurines that had sat on the tombstone, said Cpl. Kathe Deheer, who speaks for Red Deer RCMP. As well, flowers at the site had been thrown on the ground nearby, and a number of commemorative items, including several service pins, previously left there were missing.
“I find it very disturbing anytime anybody vandalizes in a cemetery, and specifically with this one it does hit close to home,” said Deheer, adding, “We can’t speculate whether it was targeted or just a random act.”
The damage likely occured sometime last weekend, she said. Const. Leo Johnston, Const. Brock Myrol, Const. Peter Schiemann and Const. Gordon were killed by gunman James Roszko on Mar. 3, 2005.
Anyone with information about the vandalism is being asked to call Crime Stoppers.
