Former RCMP sergeant pleads guilty to two charges

(CJCD Mix 100 News) Yellowknife, N.W.T. – A former RCMP sergeant has pleaded guilty to breach of trust of a peace officer as well as uttering a forged document.

Larry O’Brien was charged with the offenses, after $2,000 went missing from a police evidence locker in Yellowknife in 2008.

The money was later located, but the bills didn’t match those originally in the locker.

Officers with access to the money were investigated, and later the police obtained bank statements showing a $2,000 withdrawal from the 46-year-old’s account.

Crown Prosecutor David McWhinnie is asking the judge to sentence O’Brien to one to two years in jail, noting that O’Brien breached his position of trust as an RCMP officer, and then tried to cover it up by altering his bank records.

O’Brien was also charged with uttering threats in 2010 in relation to dealings with his colleagues, but the Crown withdrew that charge.

The case resumes Wednesday, when the judge is expected to deliver O’Brien’s sentence.
