Yellowknife, N.W.T. (CJCD Mix 100 News) – An RCMP officer charged with theft under $5,000 had his first appearance in territorial court this morning.
Sgt. Larry O’Brien didn’t show up in person, but had his lawyer speak on his behalf.
O’Brien is accused of stealing some $2,000 from a police locker at the Yellowknife detachment in May, 2008.
He’s also charged with breach of trust by a police officer, which could be tried by indictment if the matter goes to court.
That means the 21-year veteran of the force could face a more serious penalty if convicted.
The case has been adjourned until next week because the defense lawyer said they hadn’t received all the evidence.
At that time, O’Brien will have a chance to enter a plea on the charges in related to the alleged theft.

No they’ve since changed the headline – it did initially say, “former RCMP Officer” – since my message it now says former spokesperson – been corrected.
Hot debate. What do you think?

Is there ever a end to the problems with the RCMP? Possibly they are taught they are above the law as apparently they are taught in training that they are the best police force in the world. Holy mackerel that is laughable. The stupidity of the members of this organization never ends, if you don’t believe me find the story that was reported yesteday from Kamloops of the investigation started over jailers and members of the RCMP watching two females engaging in a sex act in a cell and one apparently is HIV positive. Hard to believe ANYONE can actually think the RCMP deserves to have their contract renewed here in BC

Headline has been corrected. Thanks for pointing to the error.
Don’t tell anyone, it’s suppose to help us think they are above board.
I’d have a problem believing right now that anything big would be dealth with according to the Criminal Code of Canada when the RCMP favors their own act and believe it to be far superior in their sight.

I’d be interested in knowing why the term “former” was used in the caption of this article. Is Sgt. O’Brien not still a member of the Force, suspended with pay?
