Federal Government Declines Broader Inquiry Into Claims Of RCMP Wrongdoing

Valerie Chang – AHN News Writer

The Conservative government has refused to initiate an investigation into alleged corruption by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police despite a new round of allegations against the beleaguered agency.

Lawyer William Gilmour recently wrote a letter to a Conservative MP that stated that several present and former members of the RCMP wished to present various claims of wrongdoing by the RCMP. Among other things, those claims include illegal surveillance, harassment based upon the sexual orientation of some RCMP employees, falsification of documents, and misuse of public funds.

The RCMP has also come under investigation recently for alleged misuse of money in its pension fund.

Despite the new round of allegations and Liberal and New Democrat calls for a broader public inquiry, Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day indicated that the Conservative government has no intention of doing so.

Mr. Day indicated that an investigator will issue a report on the alleged misuse of pension funds by June 15, and a broader inquiry would be too expensive and time consuming. Mr. Day also indicated that a new RCMP commissioner would be appointed soon, and there would be a change in the process for reviewing complaints.
