Facebook page inspires rally against police brutality

Kelowna, B.C. (CHBC News) – What’s being called “a peaceful rally to protest police brutality against citizens” has been organized for this Sunday in downtown Kelowna.

Demonstrators will meet at 12 pm at Kelowna City Park and march to the RCMP detachment in the city’s downtown core.

The protest is an offshoot of a Facebook page created in the wake of the violent arrest of Kelowna resident Buddy Tavares by a RCMP officer.

The officer involved, Constable Geoff Mantler, has been suspended from duty with pay.

The Facebook page calls for Mantler to be charged with assault.

John, who doesn’t want his last name used for fear of retribution from police, says he started the Facebook page to create a space for people to sound off on the incident.

Since the page was created last weekend, more than 2,700 people have thrown their support behind it.

John says he has been surprised by how quickly the page has taken off.

He adds many people from across Canada and even the United States have joined it.

“Citizens of Kelowna and across Canada are tired of hearing about these types of incidents,” John said. “I mean, at some point, someone has to be found accountable.”
