Ex-Mountie from Sask. faces murder trial

(CBC News) – A former Saskatchewan RCMP officer will stand trial for first-degree murder in the death of an Ottawa police officer, a judge ruled Thursday afternoon.

There is enough evidence to commit Kevin Gregson, 43, to a full trial in the stabbing of Const. Eric Czapnik, the judge ruled after a preliminary hearing in an Ottawa court.

Gregson is accused of killing Czapnik last Dec. 29 outside the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital.

Czapnik was stabbed around 4:30 a.m. while writing notes in his cruiser outside the emergency department. He had no known connection to Gregson.

At the time, the ex-Mountie was under suspension from the RCMP for an incident in 2006. He has since been dismissed from the force.

Gregson was also charged in June in a separate indictment listing four counts of sexual assault causing bodily harm and four counts of sexual interference with a person under 16, all in relation to a single victim.

He underwent a psychiatric assessment in the spring that determined he was fit to stand trial on the murder charge.

His preliminary hearing on that charge was scheduled to last five days, but Crown lawyers called just a few witnesses and wrapped up in two. Evidence presented at the hearing is protected by a publication ban.

Gregson is due back in court Nov. 12 for a pre-trial conference.
