A former British Columbia RCMP officer has been charged with two counts of child luring, following an investigation that began more than a year ago.

Adam Jonathan Clarke, 23, was a member of the Langley detachment in B.C.’s Fraser Valley when he came under suspicion from the Integrated Internet Child Exploitation Unit.

Police say the two luring charges involve internet chat rooms and children under the age of 18.

Clarke, who resigned from the police force because of the investigation, is currently in his home province of Newfoundland and Labrador. He is being returned to B.C. to face the charges.

The RCMP say the charges followed a child pornography investigation begun in 2005.

Clarke was arrested at work in June 2005, and his work computer seized. He was released the same day on a promise to appear and was suspended with pay.

He later resigned from the RCMP.

The child luring charge was added to the Criminal Code in 2002. It makes it a crime to communicate with someone believed to be a child for the purpose of committing a sexual offence.
