(CBC News) – Alberta RCMP are investigating the death of a drunk man who had been taken into custody at the Gleichen detachment.
Police were called to the Vulcan hospital, southeast of Calgary, on Wednesday evening to deal with an intoxicated man who was being abusive to staff as they were trying to discharge him.
Officers arrested him for causing a disturbance in a public place and transported him to the Gleichen detachment, said the RCMP on Thursday.
Upon the man’s arrival at the detachment, he went into medical distress. Paramedics tried to resuscitate him but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, said RCMP.
The RCMP have notified the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, the independent agency that investigates serious injuries or death involving police. The RCMP major crimes unit will be leading the investigation into the circumstances of the death.
Hi. I have worked in many places across Canada, and know that things have got better. When I was an ER Charge Nurse, I started to get more inebriated drunk/stoned folks who otherwise would have had a Starlight Tour or gone to the drunk tank. My job got a lot harder- the ‘patients’ would not get a police officer to assist me, but would be like any other patient. We would not be able to admit them to a room (who would want this person next to their grandmother, yelling, singing, cursing) or grandfather? I had my share of whacks and punches from these patients, and could never press charges (confused patients are the norm- whether it be because of dementia, psychosis or otherwise). The broken nose of one of my coworkers was just deserts for us. So next time you dont want the cops looking after your drunk relative, come on down to a small town hospital and help out the nurses with their drunk patients. I think if it hadnt been for physical and chemical restraints, my job would have been impossible. After all, I have other patients who need my help, too.

I though the RCMP wasn’t going to investigate themselves anymore…. lots of talk but nothing seems to change, does it?
