Cranmer disciplined by RCMP, will keep job

Sarah Simpson (Postmedia News) – The internal investigation into the actions of Lake Cowichan Mountie Const. Kevan Jay Cantwell Cranmer has concluded and the officer will keep his job.

“The member was disciplined under the RCMP Act,” said Vancouver-based senior media relations officer Sgt. Rob Vermeulen on Tuesday evening.

He said he was unable to “get into the details” of the discipline because it’s an administrative process and that’s the RCMP’s policy.

“We can’t disclose the recommendations or details of the internal discipline,” he noted. “It’s important to remember that discipline is intended to be a corrective measure. I can tell you that yes, he continues to be a member of the RCMP.”

The 27-year-old got a conditional discharge in court Oct. 6 for assaulting a woman while working at a CounterAttack roadblock on South Shore Road on Dec. 13.

Another on-duty officer later filed a complaint, saying Cranmer used excessive force in dealing with the woman.

Judge Tony Dohm said rehabilitation was necessary in this case, as was the message of deterrence and denunciation to other police officers. He imposed a ninemonth conditional discharge that includes 50 hours of community service.
