Coquitlam Mountie pleads guilty to assaulting a driver during traffic stop

Jennifer Saltman (Vancouver Province) – A Coquitlam RCMP constable has pleaded guilty to assault stemming from a routine traffic stop.

Const. Marko Duran, 39, was not present when his lawyer entered the plea in B.C. Provincial Court in Port Coquitlam, Tuesday morning.

On June 17, 2010 Duran and Const. Trevor Doylend, 34, were conducting radar enforcement when Duran flagged down a vehicle and issued a violation ticket to the driver.

However an altercation ensued and the 55-year-old driver was removed from his vehicle and arrested by Duran with help from Doylend. The officers recommended charges against the man.

The officers’ supervisor reviewed the file and had some concerns about the arrest and charge recommendation. After the supervisor watched footage of the incident captured on the in-car camera, a professional-standards investigator was assigned to look into the matter and assault charges were recommended against the officers.

No charges were laid against the driver.

The assault charge against Doylend was eventually stayed.

Duran was assigned to administrative duties when the criminal investigation was launched.

A pre-sentence report has been ordered for Duran and a sentencing hearing will be scheduled sometime Tuesday.
