(ctvcalgary.ca) – A Cochrane RCMP officer is being hailed a hero after saving the life of an elderly woman trapped in a house fire.
RCMP received a 911 call that a home was on fire on 1st Street East in Cochrane around 10 a.m. Saturday.
The house fire was just down the street from the RCMP detachment and officers responded immediately.
When officers arrived on scene about a minute after the 911 call came in, they saw flames in the home and smoke was flowing from the roof.
A neighbour told officers someone might be inside the building.
EMS and firefighters had not yet arrived on scene, so Cst. Lee Sandau took matters into his own hands and went inside the burning home to see if anyone was still inside.
When Cst. Sandau entered the smoke-filled home, he saw someone lying on the floor near the door, so he grabbed the person by the arms and summoned the help of EMS who had just arrived on scene.
Cst. Sandau and an EMS technician were able to remove the elderly woman from the home.
She was treated by EMS and taken to hospital.
The woman, whose name isn’t being released at this time, suffered substantial burns to her body.
The house, a duplex, sustained significant damage to the second floor.
A pet cat died in the fire.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
