Camera in cell area will show truth about injury allegation: RCMP

(CBC News) – RCMP say a video recording made at the time a Stony Rapids woman was arrested will reveal the full story of the incident, which has generated a $250,000 lawsuit against the mounties.

In a statement of claim filed June 25 in Saskatoon, Angie MacDonald is seeking damages stemming from injuries she says she suffered when she was arrested by police in the northern Saskatchewan community some two weeks earlier.

MacDonald’s claim, which has not been proven in court, says an RCMP officer kicked her in the back of her left leg while she was being placed in a holding cell.

The 39-year-old mother of two claims she was arrested for no good reason. She told CBC News that she was in her home when police arrived at 1 a.m. on June 8 to arrest her.

The RCMP response to the allegations does not shed much more light on the issue, but police do confirm that MacDonald had been in their custody.

Beyond that, however, RCMP Insp. Randy McGinnis would not say much, other than he disagrees with MacDonald’s version of what happened.

“It’s very unfortunate that anyone gets hurt in any situation,” McGinnis told CBC News. “It’s not our intent to go out and injure people, or to have my members injured when they respond to a complaint.”

Surveillance camera recorded incident

McGinnis added that the RCMP have videotape, from inside the Stony Rapids detachment and it was in the hands of investigators. He said the tape will show what happened.

MacDonald has been in hospital, in Saskatoon, undergoing treatment for the injuries to her leg. It is immobilized by a cluster of surgical pins, and Macdonald is concerned she may be disabled.

“I would like to see something done about this,” MacDonald told CBC News. “Nobody deserves this, for nothing.”

Stony Rapids is a community of 255 people, about 65 kilometres from Saskatchewan’s northern border.
