B.C. Mountie rescues woman from submerged vehicle

(CBC News) – An RCMP officer tied a rope around his waist, jumped into chest-deep water and pulled a woman to safety after her vehicle went off a boat ramp in Comox, B.C.

The incident happened at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Comox Valley RCMP said Friday.

In a statement, Const. Tammy Douglas said the vehicle was in chest-deep water, except for its back end, when Const. Don Sinclair arrived at the scene.

“[Sinclair] tied a rope around his waist and entered the water to the submerged vehicle,” Douglas said.

“He then broke out the rear window of the SUV and successfully removed the woman from the back seat of vehicle. The woman appeared confused and was struggling, pulling Const. Sinclair under the water several times.”

Another RCMP officer arrived and helped Sinclair bring the woman to shore. The woman, who had been the lone occupant of the SUV, was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox.

Sinclair suffered minor cuts but was otherwise uninjured, Douglas said.

Police did not release information on the woman’s condition or how the SUV ended up in the water.
