B.C. man accused of attacking Mountie, police station

Kelowna, B.C. (Canwest News Service) – A 28-year-old man was scheduled to appear in court Friday on charges stemming from an alleged attack involving several RCMP officers during what police described as an alcohol-fuelled rampage.

The man, whose identity has not been released, faces three counts of assaulting a police officer and one count of break and enter and one count of mischief to property.

The RCMP say the incident began when a woman ran up to one of its cruisers parked outside a police station in Kelowna around 7:20 p.m. Thursday.

She told the two officers that her husband has bipolar disorder and was suffering from a manic episode, according to a news release Friday.

While the woman was explaining this, her husband threw a rock at the police car and missed.

He then attempted to grab one of the officers through the window of the car leading the officer to reverse the vehicle, the news release said.

Police say the man then headed toward the police station and started banging on the door.

When another officer opened the door, the man allegedly grabbed the plainclothes officer by the shirt and tried to attack him, the RCMP said.

The man was eventually “subdued” by the three officers.

None of the officers nor the man suffered serious injuries.

Kelowna is 400 kilometres northeast of Vancouver.

Last week, the RCMP in Penticton, B.C., also dealt with a standoff at their detachment which led to the arrest of an 18-year-old man.

It’s alleged the man was armed with a 9-mm semi-automatic pistol when he broke into the police station on April 17.

Investigators believe the man wanted to shoot any officers inside, but no one was there, police said.

The man eventually left the detachment and surrendered at a nearby gas station.

He reportedly suffered minor injuries when several police station windows and parked police cruisers were damaged, according to an RCMP news release.

No one else was injured.

Benjamin L. Coan, 18, of Princeton, B.C., has been charged with two counts of uttering death threats to members of the RCMP and the public, break and enter and theft of RCMP property.
