(Canadian Press) – B.C. is prepared to co-operate with Polish officials who’ve opened a formal investigation into the death of Robert Dziekanski. But officials are skeptical charges against any police officers involved in the incident would be successful.
Polish prosecutors announced yesterday they have launched their own investigation into the case of the Polish immigrant who died at Vancouver International Airport after RCMP used a Taser stun gun on him at least twice.
It is the eighth investigation into the Oct. 14 death of the 40-year-old Dziekanski, who became agitated after spending hours fruitlessly waiting to meet his mother.
Polish prosecutors in Dziekanski’s former hometown of Gliwice said they want to find out whether RCMP officers “exceeded their authority and unintentionally caused the death.”
B.C. Attorney General Wally Oppal said Polish prosecutors are entitled to launch an investigation in an attempt to find out what happened to one of their country’s citizens.
“They are well within their rights to demand answers for what happened to their national,” said Oppal.
