Alberta Mountie charged with assaulting man in police cells

Edmonton, AB (Canwest News Service) – An RCMP constable has been charged with assault after a man was injured in police cells in northern Alberta.

Const. Desmond Sandboe has also been charged with obstruction of justice.

The injuries happened Sept. 13 in Lac La Biche, Alta., and charges were announced Monday following an investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team.

Sandboe, an eight-year member of the RCMP, is scheduled to appear in Lac La Biche provincial court on Jan. 25. He was released from custody on a promise to appear and has been ordered not to contact the complainant.

Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is a provincial body composed of civilians and police officers seconded from RCMP and provincial police. They investigate cases of serious injury or death in police custody as well as sensitive allegations of police misconduct.

Lac La Biche is about 200 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.
