Aggravated assault trial continues for RCMP officer

Natasha Riebe (HQ Cowichan Valley) – The trial of an RCMP officer accused of shooting a man in Chemainus three years ago continued Monday at the Duncan courthouse.

David Pompeo is charged with aggravated assault for an incident that ended in Bill Gillespie getting shot Sept. 18, 2009.

Gillespie took the stand last week and described the events leading up to the shooting. He was driving on Henry Rd. when he noticed the police behind him. At the time, he was under a driving ban.

Gillespie said he pulled into his friend’s driveway, where the cops ordered him out of the car and onto the ground.

He said he was obeying the commands when he was shot.

Testimony is set to continue Monday in the nine-day trial. Pompeo himself began testifying on Friday, according to a clerk at the Duncan courthouse.

Pompeo was with the Duncan/North Cowichan RCMP at the time of the incident and was transferred to Nanaimo RCMP detachment where he still works.
