Lauren Cutler, Fort McMurry, Alberta (Fort McMurray Today) – The results of the 2008 RCMP and Bylaw Services Citizen Survey are in and the new RCMP superintendent said he is happy with the results.
“It’s actually pretty good,” said new RCMP superintendent Kirke Hopkins. “(There are) some areas we can attempt to improve on, but generally speaking the results were pretty good.”
A total of 1,000 questionnaires were completed via telephone last year, in an attempt to identify community perceptions of local police and bylaw services.
Results showed that 80 per cent of respondents were satisfied with local RCMP, while 19 per cent were dissatisfied. Fifty-eight per cent said police presence and visibility was excellent or good, 28 per cent said it was fair, and 14 per cent said it was poor, according media release from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
Of all schools, respondents said elementary schools were the safest, with 72 per cent of respondents saying that they thought they were safe or very safe. “Post-secondary institutions were rated the next safest at 63 per cent, while high schools’ safety rating was 53 per cent,” the release reads.
More people felt safe in their place of residence during the day than at night. In fact, 93 per cent of people said they felt safe in their homes during the day, but 85 per cent said they felt safe in their residence at night.
Over the last five years, 35 per cent of respondents said they had been a victim of crime, 65 per cent had not.
Drugs were mentioned as a police priority by 67 per cent of respondents, speeding and/or aggressive driving by 45 per cent, gangs by 17 per cent and guns by 13 per cent.
