$625M RCMP building lease a good deal

By JORGE BARRERA, Ottawa Sun

Private sector companies could not score the type of deal the federal government has with Minto Developments for the former JDS complex at 3000 Merivale Rd., say real estate experts.

The $625-million tentative deal would allow the government to buy the nearly million square foot complex for $1 after the 25-year lease ends. Paul Merivale, a vice-president and general manager of real estate firm Cushman Wakefield LePage, said Public Works has been at the leasing game a long time and would not give the government a dud deal.

“(Public Works) did their homework,” said Merivale. “No matter which way you dissect the numbers, if you look at them in an objective matter … this is probably the best deal for the RCMP and Canada.”
